Absurd Quote of the Day

During a farewell ceremony today, Mr. Cheney described outgoing Secretary Rumsfeld as "the finest Secretary of Defense this nation has ever had".

The above description of Rumsfeld seems eerily similar to the outrageous statement uttered by Mr. Bush regarding the performance of former FEMA Director Michael Brown following Hurricane Katrina: "Brownie, you're doing a heck of a job." Obviously that description was false as well. It makes perfect sense that "the finest Secretary of Defense" in our nation's history would be asked to resign in the midst of an ever growing unpopular and unsuccessful war (and would do so the day after the Democrats gained control of Congress). And with precious sound bites such as "It is unknowable how long that conflict will last. It could last six days, six weeks. I doubt six months." from Rumsfeld in February 2003 (1 month before the Iraq War started), it is amazing that he has not received the Congressional Gold Medal of Honor yet.

So I guess Liberating over 50 million people in Afghanistan and Iraq wasn't enough for you. Not to mention his efforts in destroying Al-Qaeda cells in addition to providing aid and support to millions of those affected by all of the natural disasters during his run: the tsunami in the Indian Ocean, the earthquake in Pakistan, and of course Hurricane Katrina. Perhaps your new secretary Gates will not only meet your highest prophetic standards in predicting the duration of a war, but maybe just maybe he will look deep into his crystal ball to see Rudy Giuliani being sworn-in in 2008.

Actually an unsuccessful colonization of the Middle East isn't enough for me. In regards to Afghanistan, the Taliban insurgency, including Osama bin Laden, still has not been eliminated. With Iraq, the U.S. occupation has fostered a brutal civil war between the Shi'as and Sunnis. Concerning the recent natural disasters, it boggles the mind at how quickly Mr. Bush provided aid and support to the survivors and countries affected by the tsunami and earthquake. When it came to Hurricane Katrina, disaster relief funds were not appropriated until 5 days after the storm made landfall even though Mr. Bush had been briefed well in advance of the hurricane's severity. Finally, I am not asking Secretary Gates to be prophetic, only competent.
