Well, timing sure is everything, especially when that time occurs during an election year. Before Hurricane Katrina made landfall three years ago, Mr. Bush had also issued a state of emergency for selected regions of Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi. At the same time, those selected regions of Louisiana inexplicably did not include the coastal areas, including Jefferson and Orleans Parishes, which were two of the hardest hit by the storm.
Certain individuals may argue that Friday's full state of emergency is simply an improvement from how Mr. Bush and his administration drastically mishandled the situation with Hurricane Katrina. However, I have a strange feeling that the hotly contested presidential election two months from now probably has a little something to do with it. Why I am little skeptical? Earlier today, both Mr. Bush and Mr. Cheney announced they would not attend the Republican National Convention this week to concentrate on emergency preparations for Hurricane Gustav. However, Cheney is leaving for a four-day foreign trip on Tuesday so I guess those pesky citizens of New Orleans will have to wait for him to return.
